Word to the Wise
Sunday, November 19, 2006 - 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time
[Daniel 12:1-3; Hebrews 10:11-14, 18; Mark 13:24-32]]Heaven and earth will pass away but my words will not pass away.
When things are falling apart, what can a person hold on to? This is as true in regard to the end of the world as it is in regard to life immediately around us! I know many people who have said that if they did not have their religious faith, they could not have survived a particular crisis. Cynics may consider religion a "crutch" but crutches are not for when the whole of life seems to be in chaos. Something more future-oriented is needed. Something that gives hope! The liturgical year always ends with a consideration of "last things" which reminds us of God's ultimate triumph which is ours if we persevere. In a way, that is why Christmas follows soon, almost as a response to our need for hope. What is there that we can rely on when all the other things we rely on aren't working? Jesus tells us that his "words" will not pass away even when all that gives meaning (heaven and earth) seems to have collapsed. Perhaps these words come to us from the pages of scripture or from the touch of a friend (even from a great distance), or perhaps they come to us in a moment of clarity. What is sure is that with God we ultimately triumph. In this sense, "last things" are turned into "first things" - a new life. AMEN
