Word to the Wise
Sunday, April 8, 2007 - Easter Sunday - The Resurrection of the Lord
[Acts 10:34A, 37-43; Colossians 3:1-4 or 1 Corinthians 5:6B-8; John 20:1-9 or Luke 24:13-35]For our paschal lamb, Christ, has been sacrificed. Therefore, let us celebrate the feast, not with the old yeast, the yeast of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
If one reads through all the scriptural options offered for the celebration of the Eucharist on Easter Sunday, one may notice a consistent mention of people bearing witness. Peter in Acts; Colossians and Corinthians in St. Paul; Mary Magdalen in John; the disciples on the road to Emmaus in Luke! The idea seems to be to "get the word out!" Christ is risen! If I may borrow a contemporary term, it is important to be "on message" about the Resurrection! However, no amount of preaching about the event will make a difference unless we are credible witnesses. I personally repond to St. Paul's use of the image of yeast in bread. A little will do wonders! Credible witnesses will live and speak in sincerity and truth. We are not preaching a fable about something that supposedly happened 2000 years ago. We are living in the Resurrection in our own time. Each of us can accomplish a lot if we live our faith in sincerity and truth. That way was preached to us by Jesus before his death and resurrection. Now he has "gone before us" and we must follow in his path. If we are people of faith, of hope, of love; if we do not turn our backs on the poor and oppressed; if we live in integrity of moral conduct - we will be"on message" before we speak a word. Our lives will proclaim: Christ is risen! Alleluia! To each and every member of my Beloved Congregation, I wish a joyful and blessed Easter celebration! Christ is risen! Alleluia! AMEN!
