MONDAY, APRIL 13, 2009 MONDAY IN THE OCTAVE OF EASTER [Acts 2:14, 22-33 and Matthew 28:8-15] Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went away quickly from the tomb, fearful yet overjoyed, and ran to announce the news to his disciples. The disciples are in hiding. They ran away when Jesus was arrested. Even Peter, who followed at a distance, denies Jesus. It is the women who venture out to see the tomb and they experience the apocalyptic earthquake and vision of the angel who sends them away with a message for the disciples. On their way, they meet the Risen Lord, who gives them the same message: "Do not be afraid. Go tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and they will see me." The women become the first preachers of the good news! It is news that makes them both fearful and overjoyed! Mary Magdalene is a special patroness for us Dominicans because she has been considered the first preacher commissioned by the Lord to bring the good news! The Lord rewarded the brave women who came to the tomb, despite the guards that had been placed there. Furthermore, it is clear that Jesus is not going to permit the disciples to continue hiding in fear. They are being forgiven their cowardice and being summoned to a final commissioning! The shock and joy of the resurrection make for hectic and confusing times for those first participants. But the command is the same, "Do not be afraid. Go and tell......" If we find ourselves saying, "I enjoyed Easter but I'm glad it's over so I can get the end of the semester stuff done, etc. etc...." we may as well have never celebrated it at all! Christ is risen! Tell everyone you know! AMEN! ALLELUIA!
