Word to the Wise

[Acts 2:36-41 and John 20:11-18]Woman, why are you weeping?
As ever, John the Evangelist tells a story differently from the other evangelists. And his way is always dramatic. This time, Mary Magdalen is the major character on stage, even if the story is about the resurrection of Jesus. Many of John's scene's proceed by steps of understanding where the character only gradually understands what Jesus is saying or what is happening. Here Mary Magdalen seems to converse with angels as if it were the ordinary thing. Perhaps that's the way they appeared to her - ordinary guys hanging around the tomb. She's just interested in finding the body! Then she turns around and thinks she's seeing the gardener. She doesn't even recognize him when he speaks at first, only when he says her name! Then recognition dawns! The results, however, are the same as those of the other evangelists. Mary Magdalen is told to go and tell the good news to the other disciples, whom Jesus now calls his "brothers." The words of the gospel say it so well: "Mary went and announced to the disciples, 'I have seen the Lord,' and then reported what he had told her. " Those are our orders, too! Christ is risen! Alleluia! AMEN
