Word to the Wise
Wednesday, April 15, 2009 - Wednesday in Holy Week
[Acts 3:1-10 and Luke 24:13-35]I have neither silver nor gold, but I do have I give you: in the name of Jesus Christ the Nazorean, rise and walk.
Many is the time as a pastor that I have thought of this phrase from the Acts of the Apostles! I am confronted by so many sad and difficult situations which so many believe can be solved by a monetary donation, and I have not the resources to meet what they consider to be their need. "I don't need a sermon, Father, I need bus money!" How can we bring a message about Jesus Christ the Nazorean to a world that believes that anyone with faith is an easy source of cash?! Perhaps the most eloquent responses may be found in the examples of Dorothy Day in our country and Mother Teresa of Calcutta in India. There are others...... They bring the message while sharing the poverty of those in need. Their example is a challenge to us all. Yet, as a preacher, I have to believe in the power of God's word to heal and give hope! The responses of people at parish missions over and over again reinforces the importance of preaching that word of hope. It's what I have to give. If one has silver and gold to give, then that is the gift for them to give. In the meantime, The Word to the Wise and any other preaching I do has to be what I can offer. AMEN
