Word to the Wise
Wednesday, October 21, 2009 - Wednesday in the Twenty-ninth Week in Ordinary Time
[Romans 6:12-18 and Luke 12:39-48]Much will be required of the person entrusted with much, and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more
As usual, Peter follows Jesus' admonition to be alert and faithful with a question as to whom Jesus is speaking about. Jesus warns him that the greater responsibility will be on those who are entrusted with the leadership of the community! This means that the responsibility of our Holy Father and the bishops is great indeed! That fact, however, does not relieve us of any responsibility for preaching the message. All of us who are baptized are responsible for sharing the great gift of our faith. The task entrusted to the leaders is big but it begins for them just as it does for us - with baptism. A failure to take discipleship seriously on our parts simply makes their task harder because they will be alone. The "priesthood of the baptized" may differ from the ordained priesthood, but that does not mean the faithful are passive participants. We've been warned about our responsibility and so have they! AMEN
