Word to the Wise
Tuesday, October 20, 2009 - St. Paul of the Cross, C.P. (founder of the Passionist Order)
[Romans 5:12, 15B, 17-19, 20B-21 and Luke 12:35-38]Gird your loins and light your lamps and be like servants who await their master's return from a wedding, ready to open immediately when he comes and knocks.
There is a tendency to interpret the above line as being in readiness for death or the end of the space-time continuum when the Second Coming occurs. There is a third way of looking at it, as well. We can think about our readiness to have Christ come into our lives at an unexpected time or in an unexpected way. Yes, yes, we may have our faith in him, just as the servants in the parable do. They know the Master will come. This is no event in the far future for them. The same thing could have been said for the people in Jesus' own time. They were not ready for Jesus although they believed in a Messiah! Our own lives of faith often recede to the background and we fail to "look for" Jesus and fail to hear him "knock" when he comes. Note that the reward for this kind of vigilance is to have the Lord himself wait on us at a meal! If we believe that we need to stay in good physical condition in order to live well, we can apply the same kind of thinking to our spiritual lives. Flabbiness is not a good idea physically, but it can be an even worse idea in matters of faith. We should be confident of Christ's presence in many different ways instead of being afraid that he will "catch" us asleep or doing worse. Maintaining good spiritual "hygiene" can give us that confidence. AMEN
