Word to the Wise
Thursday, April 8, 2010 - Thursday in the Octave of Easter
[Acts 3:11-26 and Luke 24:35-48]"These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the law of Moses and in the prophets and psalms must be fulfilled." Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures. [Luke]
These words from the Gospel of Luke could very well sail by us without notice. We are reading in the New Testament after all and it might just be easier to take Jesus' word for it and leave the rest of the scriptures to sit unopened. When Jesus spoke these words to the frightened and amazed disciples, the only scriptures available to them were the Law of Moses, the prophets and the psalms! If he speaks of himself as being the fulfillment of those scriptures, it would seem to me that it would be a good idea for us to become familiar with them as were the disciples! What Jesus does for the disciples in this moment comes after what he had done for the two on the road to Emmaus. In both cases we told that he "opened their minds to the scriptures." This happens before the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. Most of us are blessed with that Spirit long before we become serious readers of the scriptures (if we ever do) and still we are far behind our brothers and sisters of other Christian traditions who learn the Bible from infancy. We Catholics are more prone to learn certain prayers and observances that are distinctively Catholic. We have Jesus' own word for it. If we want to understand what Holy Week and his resurrection are about, we need to know the Law of Moses, the prophets and the psalms. The Holy Spirit will help us "open our minds" if we'll just open our Bibles! AMEN
