Word to the Wise
Friday, April 9, 2010 - Friday in the Octave of Easter
[Acts 4:1-12 and John 21:1-14]Jesus said to them, "Come , have breakfast." And none of the disciples dared to ask him, "Who are you?" because they realized it was the Lord. Jesus came over and took the bread and gave it to them. and in like manner the fish..... [John]
Scripture scholars generally believe that John 21 was added onto the original gospel at some early point in the tradition. No matter how it got included, the Church considered it inspired and included it. In some ways it is like a replay of some familiar stories - the miraculous catch of fish (cf Luke 5) and the multiplication of the loaves and fishes as well as the story of the disciples on the road to Emmaus. This serves an important purpose of reminding us to reflect on Jesus' ministry as we put together the elements of understanding his resurrection. The fish catch and invitation to breakfast are reminders of our call as disciples and our gathering as disciples around the table of the Lord. It is in this context that we celebrate his life, death and resurrection. If we read further in John 21 than what we are given today in the lectionary, we see that Peter will especially be tested as a disciple. He, of all of them, needs a reminder! Remembering and celebrating are the essential elements of the Easter Octave. It's hard to have one without the other, so try to do both! AMEN
