Word to the Wise
Saturday, October 4, 2014 - Saturday in the 26th Week in Ordinary Time
[Job 42:1-3, 5-6, 12-17 and Luke 10:17-24]"I give you praise, Father, Lord of heavenand earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to the childlike...."[Luke]
The name, "Francis," is one that every Catholic would be familiar with! This is true not only because of the individual fame of St. Francis of Assisi [whom we Dominicans call "holy father Francis] but also because our current pope took the name "Francis.' And just as Francis and his ideal of poverty took the medieval church by storm, Pope Francis is shaking things up quite a bit as well!
St. Francis of Assisi found a way to touch hearts by removing all material obstacles to Christian love! Although he is associated much with nature, his movement was one that was designed to call a "self-referential church" to a radical reform. His followers would later disagree on how that reformed lifestyle should be lived, but Francis himself would become a universally loved human "icon" because he invites everyone to reflect on the dangers of becoming obsessed with possessions or institutions. This message upset many of the powers of church and kingdom at the time. Pope Francis is clearly trying to find a way to bring his namesake's spirit into the church of our times. I pray for his success and I hope you do, too! The gospel passage today tells us the kind of person who will learn from God. AMEN
