Word to the Wise
Sunday, October 5, 2014 - 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time - A
[Isa 5:1-7; Phil 4:6-9; Matt 21:33-43]"Therefore I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people that will produce its fruit." [Matthew]
Isaiah gives us the image of an unproductive vineyard. Jesus gives us the image of a vineyard that is "unproductive" because the tenant farmers refuse to give the owner his share of the crop! This parable was directed at the Chief Priests and Elders of the people, the leadership of the Jewish community during Jesus' last days in Jerusalem, after he had "cleansed" the temple. His teaching authority was questioned and he replied with a series of parables, including the one today. The intent of the parable is to warn the listeners of the consequences of failing to accept and preach God's Kingdom
There is a further intent, however: the intent of the evangelist. The parable is meant for subsequent generations as well. We have a precious opportunity each day with God's Kingdom. How often is it squandered? Do we take our faith for granted? Or as a personal possession for which we are unaccountable, like the tenants in the vineyard? In Isaiah, it is the vineyard itself that is at fault. In the gospel today, the "tenants" are at fault. In either case, it is precious opportunity that is squandered. The Gospel of Matthew gives a certain "urgency" to preaching the Kingdom. If we are not feeling that "urgency," perhaps we should ask why? AMEN
