Word to the Wise
Thursday, November 27, 2014 - 4th Thurs. in Nov. - Thanksgiving Day
[Sirach 50:22-24; 1 Corinthians 1:3-9; Luke 17:11-19]As they were going they were cleansed. And one of them, realizing that he had been healed, returned, glorifying God in a loud voice; and he fell at the feet of Jesus and thanked him. [Luke]
THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 27, 2014 THANKSGIVING DAY [U.S.A]
What captures my attention in this gospel scripture on this Thanksgiving Day is the leper's "realizing that he had been healed," and what he did when that happened. We may assume the others were cured, but we don't know any more than that. However, the Samaritan leper was "healed" in many ways. The leprosy was cleansed and he was restored to human community, but he also came to faith. We are told that "he fell at the feet of Jesus and thanked him."
I cannot help but think that if we take the time to realize what God has done for us by counting our blessings, we could be as overwhelmed as the leper was! Perhaps we may not be able to literally fall at the feet of Jesus, but if we can realize the profound ways that God is good to us, perhaps we can pray in a more profound way of thanksgiving!
I will be especially thankful for the Beloved Congregation on this day and remember you all at the celebration of the Eucharist. I will be grateful, too, for family, friends, Dominican community and my preaching ministry. I am sure you can find similar blessings and thank God in a loud voice! AMEN
[Note to the Beloved Congregation. I have just published a selection of Sunday homilies from The Word to the Wise on Amazon. It is entitled: MY SUNDAY BEST - The Word to the Wise for Sundays by Rev.
