Word to the Wise
Friday, November 28, 2014 - Friday in the 34th Week in Ordinary Time
[Rev 20:1-4, 11-21:2 and Luke 21:29-33]" Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away." [Luke]
After warning his disciples not to interpret the destruction of the temple and Jerusalem as meaning the end of time has come, and warning them that persecution awaited them, Jesus assures them of his abiding presence. He would be their strength in time of trouble.
Indeed, people are still taking the apocalyptic language used by Jesus very literally and become convinced that the end of the world has come. Experience has shown the futility of these efforts! Only God knows when time and the world as we know it will come to an end. What is important is that we live with the fact that all creation has a limit. Each of us will die after a period of life on earth. Time and the world will come to an end for us individually. What is particularly true in today's gospel passage is that Jesus' words have not passed away, despite wars, plagues and earthquakes! He continues to abide with us in his words, which were written down for us by the evangelists and preached by his disciples and handed down to us by preachers like Peter and Paul! Those words, supported in our experience of Jesus in sacramental life, will be our strength! AMEN
