Word to the Wise
Tuesday, September 15, 2015 - Sept. 15 - Our Lady of Sorrows
[Heb 5:7-9; [opt. Sequence: Stabat Mater]; John 19:25-27 or Luke 2:33-35,1262]TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 2015 OUR LADY OF SORROWS [ 1 Timothy 3:1-13 and John 19:25-27 or Luke 2:33-35] "Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be contradicted and you yourself a sword will pierce so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed." [Luke] Although some devotion to the sorrow of Mary goes back to the 13th century, this feast day was instituted in the whole church only in 1814. It was sponsored largely by the Servite friars, for whom this is a major devotional focus. The seven sorrows are: Simeon's prophecy [cf. quote above], the flight into Egypt, the search for Jesus in Jerusalem, the road to Calvary, the crucifixion, the removal of Jesus from the cross, and the entombment. I am not sure why the feast was placed next to the Exaltation of the Cross (yesterday) but t seems to me that the placement offers the reflection that even those close to Jesus were not protected from anxiety. Perhaps this is a feast for Moms who suffer for their children but I think we are all invited to consider what our parents did for us. Mary is featured in the Vatican II document on the Church as the model disciple and model for the Church. On this day, we share her sorrows and on every day, she shares ours. AMEN [Note to the Beloved Congregation. Some days the internet doesn't work. When that happens, I have to use my phone to preach. I know this can make for strange communication, but it's all I have when the net is down!]
