Word to the Wise
Wednesday, September 16, 2015 - Wednesday in the 24th Week in Ordinary Time
[1 Tim 3:14-16 and Luke 7:31-35]"Wisdom is vindicated by all her children." [Luke]
Politicians are well aware of just how fickle public opinion can be. But Jesus was well ahead of them in his comment about the way he and john the Baptist were perceived. Many thought John the Baptist was crazy. Others thought that Jesus spent too much time at table, eating and drinking with people who were considered to be "sinners." In the midst of such talk about public figures like Jesus or John the Baptist it could have been difficult to know the truth. Jesus' comment, however, points out that those who stick to the path of wisdom will bear the truth.
Sometimes the path of wisdom can be very difficult. Jesus' own life shows that. The martyrs Cornelius and Cyprian demonstrate that. Any pastor knows that standing for the truth about Jesus and the church can be very difficult. There are always people ready to criticize or "stir the pot." If we embrace the wisdom of Jesus we will have to bear with misunderstanding and hostility on occasion. AMEN
