Word to the Wise
Wednesday, November 25, 2015 - Wednesday in the 34th Week in Ordinary Time
[Dan 5:1-6, 13-14, 16-17, 23-28 and Luke 21:12-19]WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 25, 2015 WEDNESDAY IN THE THIRTY-FOURTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME [Daniel 5:1-6, 13-14, 16-17, 23-28 and Luke 1:12-19] "Suddenly, opposite the lampstand, the fingers of a human hand appeared, writing on the plaster of the wall in the king's palace.. When the king saw the wrist and hand that wrote, his face blanched; his thoughts terrified him, his hip joints shook, and his knees knocked." Today we learn the origin of the expression, "the handwriting on the wall." It has lost none of its original meaning. It still means a warning of disaster ahead. The Babylonians would indeed give way to the Medes and Persians. So, Daniel is shown to be a great prophet even as a young man. It might be a good exercise to consider the times in our own lives that we have experienced "the handwriting on the wall." Was it a warning from our doctor? From a teacher? From an employer? From God? Did we react like Belshazzar, whose behavior resembled a cartoon reaction to a ghost? Or did we simply ignore it in our over-confidence? The Lord's hand may be the hand of that doctor or teacher or employer or other person or event. Having a wise and prudent friend like Daniel to help us interpret the writing can be life-saving. Do we have such a person in our lives? The handwriting on the wall may spoil the party, but it may also save our life. AMEN
