Word to the Wise
Friday, November 27, 2015 - Friday in the 34th Week in Ordinary Time
[Dan 7:2-14 and Luke 21:29-33]FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 27, 2015 FRIDAY IN THE THIRTY-FOURTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME [Daniel 7:2-14 and Luke 21:29-33] "As the visions during the night continued, I saw One like a son of man coming on the clouds of heaven' when he reached the Ancient One and was presented before him, he received dominion, glory and kingship; nations and peoples of every language serve him." [Daniel] The Book of Daniel is a rich source of material for those who are interested as a matter of faith in the end of time and the Second Coming of Christ. They put Daniel's visions alongside those of John in the Book of Revelation in the New Testament and come up with amazing theories about how things are going to happen. But Daniel and John were really interested in the times in which they were living, and not in some ultimate end of time event. Their focus was on righting the wrongs of the present day and comforting those who were suffering. This Sunday, the Church will begin once more to tell the story of God's plan of salvation in Jesus Christ. The Sunday lectionary will switch to Cycle C and the daily scriptures to Cycle II, and we will once more join in the mystery. The beasts and dragons will head back to their dens and the avenging angels will put away their swords, and John the Baptist will get on the stage as the last echoes of the last things fade into the background. The Old Testament prophets will renew our hope and we'll start decorating and hunting for that nativity scene as a sign of that hope. AMEN
