Word to the Wise
Monday, November 30, 2015 - Nov. 30 - St. Andrew, Apostle
[Rom 10:9-18 and Matt 4:18-22,755]MONDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 2015, ST. ANDREW, apostle [Romans 10:9-18 and Matthew 4:18-23] As Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, simon who is called Peter, and his brother Andrew, casting a net into the sea; they were fishermen. He said to them, "Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men>" At once they left their nets and followed him. [Matthew] The apostle Andrew must have been quite an itinerant preacher. Both Greece and Scotland claim that he preached there! I'm envious! What we have surer information about is that he was one of the first of Jesus' followers. The Gospel of John [1:40 et seq.] has a different account of his calling than the one we have today in Matthew but both are possible when it comes to recalling events much later on in the writing of the gospels. Today's account has Andrew and Simon Peter responding immediately to Jesus' call to discipleship. Tradition has them both meeting the same fate as Jesus: crucifixion. However, our church is built upon the foundation faith of the apostles who preached the faith far and wide (if Greece and Scotland are right). It is this faith that leads us into the mystery of Advent and its meaning. Stay tuned! AMEN
