Word to the Wise
Tuesday, December 1, 2015 - 1st Week of Advent - Tues
[Isa 11:1-10 and Luke 10:21-24]TUESDAY, DECEMBER 1, 2015 TUESDAY IN THE FIRST WEEK OF ADVENT [Isaiah 11:1-10 and Luke 10:21-24] On that day, a shoot shall sprout from the stump of Jesse, and from his roots a bud shall blossom. The Spirit of The Lord shall rest upon him, a Spirit of wisdom and of understanding.....[Isaiah] Isaiah offers words of hope about a deliverer in a time of trouble and sorrow. Centuries later the Christian community would look back on these words as foretelling the coming of Christ. But at the time that Jesus was living and teaching, this faith was only developing in the minds and hearts of his disciples. They could not comprehend the momentous importance of his coming. The words of Jesus in today's gospel reflect a later appreciation: "Blessed are the eyes that see what you see." We have the benefit of all the reflection of the centuries of Christian life, but do we realize how blessed our eyes are? Advent offers us a wonderful opportunity to join all those who have gone before us in reflecting not only on the promises contained in the prophets, but on the fulfillment of those promises in the birth of Jesus Christ. What we can see and hear in this can make a tremendous difference in the way we live this season of Advent. AMEN
