Word to the Wise
Friday, April 8, 2016 - 2nd Week of Easter - Fri
[Acts 5:34-42 and John 6:1-15]FRIDAY, APRIL 8, 2016 FRIDAY IN THE SECOND WEEK OF EASTER [Acts 5:34-42 and John 6:1-15] "When the people saw the sign he had done, they said, 'This is truly the Prophet, the one who is to come into the world.' Since Jesus knew that they were going to come and carry him off to make him King, he withdrew again to the mountain alone." [John] The people were right but for the wrong reason. Jesus was indeed "the one who is to come into the world," but not for the purpose of becoming a ruler or king of the sort envisioned by popular opinion. This would be further illustrated by the inscription Pilate put over Jesus' head: "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews." The sign that provoked this response was the multiplication of the loaves and fishes. As is frequent in the Gospel of John, the audience misunderstands the meaning of the sign and Jesus will give what is called by scripture scholars "the Bread of Life" discourse. This is worth reading in its entirety at this point because it is in the Eucharist that we recall the death and resurrection of the Lord. Jesus will point to himself as a new manna in the desert and then, as the very bread of life, to be consumed by those who believe in him. Jesus is indeed the one whom God has sent. The people were right about that, but they misunderstood why. It is important that we get the message right and proclaim it. AMEN
