Word to the Wise
Saturday, April 9, 2016 - 2nd Week of Easter - Sat
[Acts 6:1-7 and John 6:16-21]SATURDAY, APRIL 9, 2016 SATURDAY IN THE SECOND WEEK OF EASTER [Acts 6:1-7 and John 6:16-21] "It is not right for us to neglect the word of God to serve at table." [Acts] One of the primary features of the first Christian communities involved the sharing of food resources. Today's first scripture from the Acts of the Apostles shows that this feature was not without problems and tensions. There were ethnic differences based on language and cultural background. Every pastor knows how these differences can arise. The wise pastor also knows that these disputes can absorb a great deal of time and energy. The disciples didn't take long to realize that some of these duties had to be delegated. The result is shown today. Seven "reputable" men were formally appointed by prayer and the laying on of hands. In this we find some of the roots of the modern order of Deacon, but not exactly the same. There are times when I wish more pastors would pay attention to the quote. They become more involved with the food distribution than they do with the word of God! At the same time, I want to encourage the Beloved Congregation to find ways to encourage any ordained deacons in your parish. They are often "in the middle" of pastor-parishioner conflicts. However, both priest and Deacon are charged with feeding the People of God with the word of God as well as with ordinary food. Both ministries are important, but the one most likely to suffer from neglect is the "word of God." Preachers need encouragement and good feedback. The folks in the pew may have to heed Jesus' words, "Do not be afraid," and offer that feedback! AMEN
