Word to the Wise
Friday, April 29, 2016 - 5th Week of Easter - Fri
[Acts 15:22-31 and John 15:12-17]FRIDAY, APRIL 29, 2016. ST. CATHERINE OF SIENA, O.P. [Acts 15:22-31 and John 15:12-17] "It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name he may give you. This I command you: love one another." [John] Catherine of Siena was not only an important figure in European history in the 14th century, she remains an important figure in the history of. Christian spirituality and in the history of the Dominican Order. She is also an inspiration to those who choose to combine a life of apostolic activity with a contemplative orientation. She is an example of what Jesus says in today's gospel, as quoted above. As to 14th century European history, she was important as an emissary in the efforts to end the Avignon papal exile and in several conflicts between Italian city states. As to Christian spirituality, her DIALOGUES, letters and prayers are widely read, reflected on and used in the study of that subject. As to apostolic activity, she spent herself in the care of the poor and sick - so much so that she died in her early thirties! Her life was remarkable by the standards of the 14th century and the twenty-first century. For the women who belong to the Order of Preachers (Dominicans) she is the symbol of the woman preacher, but we Friars look to her as well in her exhortations to St. Raymond of Capua, who was Master of the Order and also served as her confessor, biographer and friend. Christ chose her to go and bear fruit that will remain. She did that, and so can we. AMEN
