Word to the Wise

[Acts 16:1-10 and John 15:18-21]SATURDAY, APRIL 30, 2016. ST.PIUS V, O.P. [Saturday in the 5th week in ordinary time] [Acts 16:1-10 and John 15:18-21] "If the world hates you, realize that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, the world would love it's own; but because you do not belong to the world, and I have chosen you out of the word, the world hates you." [John] The "world" in the Gospel of John represents those who do not believe in Jesus. However, that "world" was meant more in terms of the adversaries. The Gospel of John has a kind of black or white approach - an us or them attitude, based on the experience of the community at the time. In our own day, the "world" could be a larger reality represented in secularism or other ideological movements hostile to Christianity. Jesus says this is because "they do not know the one who sent me." These last words present another "theme," "The One who sent me." When asked by the crowd, "How do we accomplish the works of God, " Jesus replies, "This is the work of God: believe in the one he has sent." [John 6:29]. Everything really hinges on this. All the "works" of Jesus make sense if one believes he is the one sent by God. Either you do or you don't. Perhaps you aren't sure, like NIcodemus, and that is possible, but Nicodemus came to faith. We can do the same. AMEN
