Word to the Wise
Friday, June 17, 2016 - Friday in the 11th Week in Ordinary Time
[2 Kgs 11:1-4, 9-18, 20 and Matt 6:19-23]FRIDAY, JUNE 17, 2016 FRIDAY IN THE ELEVENTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME [2 Kings 11:1-4, 9-18, 20 and Matthew 6:19-23] "For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be." [Matthew] What is my treasure? How would I know? Is it really something material that "moth and decay can destroy, and thieves break in and steal?" Do I face the familiar problem that my thoughts and my behavior are at war on this question? That is, I swear that my treasure is my wife and children, but I spend all my time at work and they rarely see me. Or, I consider God to be the center of my life but I rarely pray because my schedule rules my life. Where, really, IS my heart? Jesus' treasure/heart question hits the center of human efforts to live according to the values that we, at least verbally, espouse as Christians. I have mentioned a number of times a retreat exercise in campus ministry in which participants are given slips of paper to list the five most important people, five most important possessions and five most important activities in their lives. That is a big challenge. But then comes a bigger challenge. They are asked to discard them beginning with the "least" important. Many a tear begins to flow. The tyrannies of "stuff," "career," "addictions," and "power" are like a chorus of false maps that lead away from that "treasure" that we may have buried somewhere and forgotten where. Realizing that we have buried it is the first step to finding it. AMEN
