Word to the Wise
Saturday, November 5, 2016 - Saturday in the 31th Week in Ordinary Time
[Phil 4:10-19 and Luke 16:9-15]SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 2016 SATURDAY IN THE THIRTY-FIRST WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME [Philippians 4:10-19 and Luke 16:9-15] "No servant can serve two masters. He will either hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon." [Luke] "Do I own my stuff, or does my stuff own me?" I hear versions of that statement from friends from time to time. Another phrase I hear is, "I wish I had more time for prayer. I'm a slave to my calendar." Statements like these are an indication that there is more than one master in our lives. This can be seen in what has happened to Sunday Mass attendance. Many find themselves "squeezing in " Mass in a weekend as busy as the rest of the week! God and faith become just one of many "masters" that we serve in the week. Reflecting on this can be frustrating for many. This is as true for busy pastors as it is for parents with children and careers/jobs to juggle. Yet, I believe that good spiritual hygiene is just as important as good physical hygiene. When either of those is ignored, there can be serious consequences. This means that being a good servant of the Lord should be the starting point and the determining force in our daily life. Everything else can be seen in that light, including our calendars! AMEN
