Word to the Wise
Sunday, November 6, 2016 - 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time - C
[2 Macc 7:1-2, 9-14; 2 Thess 2:16-3:5; Luke 20:27-38 or 20:27, 34-38]SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 2016 THIRTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME [2 Maccabees 7:1-2, 9-14; 2 Thessalonians 2:16 - 3:5; Luke 20:27-38] "That the dead will rise even Moses made known in the passage about the bush, when he called out 'Lord,' the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob; and he is not God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive." We are all alive for God! That is quite a thought when one considers how many humans have lived in the course of time! We may be personally concerned that God is aware of each of us, but the bigger picture is overwhelming. The question put to Jesus in today's gospel scene was meant by the Sadducees to test him with an absurd situation as a way of finding fault. For the Sadducees did not believe in a final resurrection of the dead. They only accepted the Torah, the first five books of the Old Testament, in which they believed there was no reference to such a final resurrection. Jesus refutes them by calling attention to the fact that God, in the burning bush, speaks of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob as if they are alive. Almost every year there is a new book that speaks to "after death" experiences. Many people find comfort in these accounts. The practice of having cemeteries where we can remember our loved ones who have died speaks to our abiding faith of being reunited with them someday. Our own Christian Faith, however, is based on Jesus' resurrection. As he says to Martha in John 11:25-26: "I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die." We are all alive for God, and in this life, we are challenged to live in the light of that truth. AMEN
