Word to the Wise
Tuesday, January 3, 2017 - Jan. 3
[1 John 2:29-3:6 and John 1:29-34]TUESDAY, JANUARY 3, 2017 TUESDAY IN CHRISTMAS SEASON [1 John 2:29-3:6 and John 1:29-34] See what love the Father has bestowed on us that we may be called the children of God. Yet so we are. [1 John] One of the Christmas carols we hear during this season is "What child is this." The emphasis is on the birth of Jesus, but his birth has a significance that could escape us. Both St. Paul and St. John's writings refer to us as "children of God." St. Paul also refers to us as the "Body of Christ." Through baptism we are identified with Christ and become, in St. Paul's words, "heirs of God and heirs with Christ." The great Dominican mystic of the 14th century, Meister Eckhart, wrote, "What good is it for me that Christ was born so many years ago if he is not born in me every day." Through baptism, we take our place in that manger, that trip to Egypt, the carpenter shop in Nazareth, the teaching, healing suffering and rising of Christ. It is a tremendous vocation and challenge to be a child of God. As we wait for those Magi to show up and remind us of the importance of this season, we can ponder the birth of our faith in the birth of Jesus. AMEN
