Word to the Wise

[1 John 3:7-10 and John 1:35-42]WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 4, 2017 ST. ELIZABETH ANN SETON [1 John 3:7-10 and John 1:35-42] Jesus turned and saw them following him and said to them, "What are you looking for?" They said to him, "Rabbi (which translated means Teacher), "Where are you staying?" He said to them, "Come, and you will see." [John] One of the events that religious orders and dioceses use as part of attracting vocations to religious life and priesthood is a "Come and see Weekend." This title, of course, is taken from the scene in today's gospel scripture. Two disciples are intrigued by the comment of John the Baptist in regard to Jesus and they "follow" him. They may think they are not noticed, but suddenly Jesus turns and confronts them with the profound question: "What are you looking for?" The disciples' response includes the very important verb in the Gospel of John, "staying." It is repeated twice more. Another important verb is "seeing." Jesus "saw" them. He asks them what they are "looking for." He tells them to "come and see." He "looks" at Simon and calls him by a new name, Peter. Our hope at a "Come and See Weekend" is that the young men who come to one sponsored by our Dominican province is that they will "see" in us what they are looking for. But this extends beyond such events. We can all ask ourselves, "What are we looking for in Jesus?" Can we respond to his invitation to "Come and See?" Are we excited enough, like Andrew, to invite someone else to join us, like Peter? AMEN
