Word to the Wise
Monday, October 2, 2017 - Oct. 2 - The Guardian Angels
[Exod 23:20-23 and Matt 18:1-5, 10]MONDAY, OCTOBER 2, 2017. THE HOLY GUARDIAN ANGELS [Zechariah 8:1-8 and Matthew 18:1-5, 10] "See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my Heavenly Father." [Matthew] The gospel passage today is it really about Guardian Angels but it is the point in scripture where we learn about them in some way. Jesus is referring to the attitude of trust and openness with which we should receive his preaching. The Guardian Angels are instruments of divine providence in this process.. In congregations of various kinds I have no trouble on this day getting them to recite with me the prayer to the Guardian Angel. Some will have the memory from Catholic elementary school of being told to move over in their desk to let the guardian angel sit down! Others have written books about encounters with angels in a time of great crisis. However we choose to imagine them, they are somehow with us to help us through God's providence. Child-like trust is how Jesus urges us to accept the Kingdom of that providence. The feast of the Guardian Angels serves as a good reminder of all this. AMEN
