Word to the Wise
Tuesday, October 3, 2017 - Tuesday in the 26th Week in Ordinary Time
[Zech 8:20-23 and Luke 9:51-56]TUESDAY, OCTOBER 3, 2017 TUESDAY IN THE TWENTY-SIXTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME [Zechariah 8:20-23 and Luke 9:51-56] Thus says the Lord of hosts: In those days ten men of every nationality, speaking different tongues, shall take hold, yes take hold of every Jew by the edge of his garment and say, "Let us go with you, for we have heard that God is with you." [Zechariah] Although the prophet Zechariah is speaking to the post-explicit Jewish community, his words have a very Pentecostal sound to them. We may recall in the account in the Acts of the Apostles [Acts 2] that people of every known Mediterranean country known to the writer are gathered and hear in their own language the apostles' preaching! The image of being grabbed by the edge of one's garments to get attention is wonderful. It speaks of an an it to know God. I have known people, especially students, who attracted others not by trying to convert them but by simply and intentionally practicing their Catholic faith. Others see this and wonder, "What does he/she have that I don't have?" One of the Letters of St. Peter urges us always to be able to give a reason for the hope that we have, but to do it gently. Can our example of lived faith attract someone so powerfully that they take hold of our sleeve or coattail and ask to come with us because they sense that God is with us? AMEN
