Word to the Wise
Monday, January 1, 2018 - Jan. 1: The Octave Day of Christmas: Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, The Mother of God - ABC
[Num 6:22-27; Gal 4:4-7; Luke 2:16-21]MONDAY, JANUARY 1, 2018. MAR, THE MOTHER OF GOD [Numbers 6:22-27; Galatians 4:4-7; Luke 2:16-21] And Mary kept these things, reflecting on them in her heart. [Luke] It took awhile for the church to come to the title "Mother of God." The theological arguments were long and detailed and there's no space for them here. Suffice it to say that what we rather take for granted about Mary as the mother of God took about three hundred years to sort out. It took even longer to make official statements about the Immaculate Conception (1854) and the Assumption (1950). What I think was clear from the beginning, however, is that she was the mother of Jesus. The gospels speak of her in this way. We begin this new calendar year invoking the Mother of God and her maternal intercession for whatever we may need. Perhaps it is help with those New Year's resolutions that always seem to fall by the wayside. Perhaps it is with family, job, health, children. We know that MAry did not have it easy and so she becomes an accessible person of compassion. She was and is a "Mom." It's a good way to start the year. AMEN
