Word to the Wise

[1 John 2:22-28 and John 1:19-28]TUESDAY, JANUARY 2, 2018. STS. BASIL THE GREAT AND GREGORY NAZIANZEN, doctors of the church. [1 John 2:22-28 and John 1:19-28] Let what you heard from the beginning remain in you. If what you heard from the beginning remains in you, then you will remain in the Son and in the Father. And this is the promise that he made us: eternal life. [1 John] The two doctors of the church whose feast we celebrate today were and continue to be highly influential in our understanding of who Jesus is. They battled against a heresy known as "Arianism" named after the principal proponent, Arius. This heresy taught that Jesus was human but not God. - simply a special human. The scriptures during this period after Christmas and before Epiphany focus on recognizing who Jesus truly is, both God and human. Both scriptures today come from the Johannine literature. The first is taken from a "Letter of John" which echoes many of the themes that are found in the gospel by that name. Simply read the "Prologue" and the themes will be clear about "beginning" and the Son with the Father. Later on in the gospel, the word "remain" will be important. The second scripture also focuses on the question: "Who are you?" This is asked of John the Baptist, but he directs it toward the one who is coming after him. Jesus is the one whom God as sent! The child in the manger is love incarnate. He is not less than God nor is he God in a human costume. He is fully God and human. Sts. Basil and Gregory help us today to remember that truth. AMEN
