Word to the Wise
Wednesday, January 3, 2018 - Jan. 3
[1 John 2:29-3:6 and John 1:29-34]WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 3, 2017. CHRISTMAS WEEKDAY [1 John 2:29 - 3:6 and John 1:29-34] See what love the Father has bestowed on us that we may be called children of God. Yet so we are...Beloved we are God's children now; what we shall be has not yet been revealed. We do know that when it is revealed we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. [1 John] These words from the First Letter of John echo the "Prologue" to the Gospel According to John which speaks of those who accept Christ being made children of God. They also echo a consistent theme in that gospel to the effect that those who believe in Jesus have eternal life. It is our faith that makes us children of God. St. Paul speaks of this as being co-heirs with Christ since we are adopted children of God by virtue of our baptism. When we look at the manger scene, do we see that child as being our "adopted brother?" It's an interesting thought. There are so many other images that can crowd in on us that considering ourselves related to Jesus may not be very prominent! Going back to the Gospel According to John and re-reading the Prologue can help us understand the words from 1 John today, and consider the richness of this season of recognition. AMEN
