Word to the Wise
Monday, January 22, 2018 - Monday in the 3rd Week in Ordinary Time
[2 Sam 5:1-7, 10 and Mark 3:22-30]MONDAY, JANUARY 22, 2018. DAY OF PRAYER FOR THE LEGAL PROTECTION OF UNBORN CHILDREN [2 Samuel 5:1-7, 10 and Mark 3:22-30] The scribes who had come from Jerusalem said of Jesus, "He is possessed by Beelzebub," and "by the Prince of demons he drives out demons." Summoning them, he began to speak to them in parables, "How can Satan drive out Satan?" [Mark] Jesus' adversaries are accusing him of being evil. That is why this passage ends with the famous unforgivable sin of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. Jesus is the antithesis of evil. To call him evil is to blaspheme against God. Of course, the scribes had no notion of Jesus as being divine, but the evangelist includes the story as a warning to others who misunderstand Jesus' power as something bad or evil. Some folks come close to this when they accuse God of being responsible for great disasters. God does not cause evil whether it be moral or natural. Of course, this subject continues to be the matter for centuries of debate. In Jesus' case, the scribes were looking for anything they could accuse him of because they had closed their minds and hearts. With folks who have closed minds and hearts, all one can do is continue to witness consistently to God's love. AMEN
