Word to the Wise
Sunday, January 21, 2018 - 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time - B
[Jon 3:1-5, 10; 1 Cor 7:29-31; Mark 1:14-20]SUNDAY, JANUARY 21, 2018. THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME [Jonah 3:1-5, 10; 1 Corinthians 7:29-31; Mark 1:14-20] "Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men." [Mark] The contrast between Jonah and the fishermen is sharp. The first scripture speaks of Jonah only after his very determined effort to avoid the call of God, which includes the famous story of him being swallowed by a "whale." The fishermen, two pairs of brothers, drop everything and follow Jesus. This weekend I begin a parish mission in Casa Grande, AZ, and it is entitled: "Fishers of Men: the baptismal call." Every one of us at baptism receives a call. Each responds in his or her own way. Some are unaware of this call. Others are intimidated. Others ignore it and keep on doing regular fishing. Somewhere in the middle are most of us, working our way through our various life challenges of home, work, church, health, etc.. It is in these very ordinary challenges that we can do the most good. We can intentionally live our faith. We show that this is not just one among many things to do but is THE thing to do and be: a faithful Catholic Christian. I like to point out that our baptism is not a past ceremonial event, but a living power in the present. That power is Jesus' call, "Follow me!" What kind of response will we give? AMEN
