Word to the Wise
Sunday, March 25, 2018 - Palm Sunday of the Lord's Passion: At the Procession with Palms - ABC
[ and A: Matt 21:1-11B: Mark 11:1-10 or John 12:12-16 C: Luke 19:28-40,]SUNDAY, MARCH 25, 2018 PALM SUNDAY OF THE LORD’S PASSION [Procession: Mark 11:1-10 or John 12:12-16; Mass: Isaiah 50:4-7; Philippians 2:6-11; Mark 14:1-15:47] “His disciples did not understand this at first, but when Jesus had been glorified they remembered that these things were written about him and that they had done this for him.” [John] Those few words, taken from the alternate procession gospel in the Gospel According to John, really sum up our participation in all the events of Holy Week. Like those first disciples, we are looking back and seeing what was written about Jesus and what happened to him, and that we are, like them, doing this for him. Today we will take palms and participate in the commemoration of Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover, which will become HIS Passover and our deliverance. But we must play our part. When the passion account is read today, we respond as the crowd, but we can also take on any other part. The first scriptures for the weekdays will come from Isaiah and show us “the Suffering Servant.” How do we react to such a portrait? Is that the figure on the donkey whose arrival we celebrate with “hosannas?” Is he the one who celebrates the Passover meal and gives himself to us entirely? Is he the one who will rise from the dead and invite us (as Thomas) be believing and not unbelieving? In accepting the branch of blessed palm, we accept the role of disciple and the challenge to read the scriptures, know what was written about Jesus, and now do this remembrance for him and for ourselves. AMEN
