Word to the Wise
Monday, March 26, 2018 - Holy Week - Mon
[Isa 42:1-7 and John 12:1-11]MONDAY, MARCH 26, 2018. MONDAY IN HOLY WEEK [Isaiah 42:1-7 and John 12:1-11] Here is my servant whom I uphold, my chosen one with whom I am pleased, upon whom I have put my Spirit...[Isaiah] The majestic and haunting words of the prophecy of Isaiah will form the first scriptures for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of Holy Week. They are traditionally called “the Songs of the Suffering Servant.” A fourth one will provide the first scripture on Good Friday. I urge the Beloved Congregation to read each one carefully. The early Christian community found them to be a prophecy about Jesus and his life and death. Indeed, the words quoted above would be echoed at Jesus’ baptism and on the mountain at the “Transfiguration.” The gospel scripture for today picks up on the poignant note from Isaiah with the story of Jesus’ anointing by Mary, the sister of Lazarus. Jesus rebukes the cynical Judas and says, “Leave her alone. Let her keep this for the day of my burial.” The anticipation of the events of the Sacred Triduum will color everything this week. Isaiah’s words can serve each day as a kind of background music to the events. One can make it a kind of “retreat week” by entering into the events with Isaiah’s words echoing in our minds. Jesus did all of this for us. AMEN
