[Acts 10:34a, 37-43; Col. 3:1-4 or 1 Cor. 5:6b-8; John 20:1-9 or Luke 24:13-35]SUNDAY, APRIL 1, 2018 THE RESURRECTION OF THE LORD - EASTER SUNDAY [Acts 10:34a, 37-43; Colossians 3:1-4 or 1 Corinthians 5:6b-8; John 20:1-9 or Luke 24:13-35] “This man God raised on the third day and granted that he be visible, not to all the people, but to us, the witnesses chosen by God in advance, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. He commissioned us to preach to the people and testify that he is the one appointed by God as judge of the living and the dead. To him all the prophets bear witness, that everyone who believes in him will receive forgiveness of sins through his name.” [Acts] Christ is risen! Alleluia! That is the reality that we are called to proclaim. The preaching of Peter in the Acts of the Apostles in today’s first scripture gives us a sample of the proclamation. Through the gift of the Eucharist, we continue to “eat and drink” with Jesus after his death and resurrection and bear witness that he is risen. We can only imagine the roller-coaster of emotions that the disciples experienced - first the arrest and crucifixion of Jesus, and then the report of his resurrection and the empty tomb, and then his appearances! It took the coming of the Holy Spirit to jolt them out of their shock and fear. It is their witness to these events that we continue in our own day. We follow in the footsteps of saints and martyrs who have made this proclamation for 2000+ years! Can we greet one another with “Christ is risen,” instead of “Happy Easter?” This year April 1st is not “April Fool’s Day.” What we proclaim is real and makes an eternal difference! Christ is risen! Alleluia! AMEN
