Word to the Wise
Monday, April 2, 2018 - Octave of Easter - Mon
[Acts 2:14, 22-33 and Matt 28:8-15]MONDAY, APRIL 2, 2018. MONDAY IN THE OCTAVE OF EASTER [Acts 2:14, 22-33 and Matthew 28:8-15] Mary Magdalen and the other Mary went away quickly from the tomb, fearful yet overjoyed, and ran to announce the news to his disciples. And behold, Jesus met them on their way and greeted them. They approached, embraced his feet, and did him homage. Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.” [Matthew] “God raised this Jesus; of this we are all witnesses. Exalted at the right hand of God, he poured forth the promise of the Holy Spirit that he received from the Father, as you both see and hear.” [Acts] We Dominicans [Order of Preachers] revere Mary Magdalen as the first preacher of the Good News of Jesus’ resurrection. She did this immediately after her encounter with Jesus, before Pentecost. The disciples were still in hiding. The Jewish authorities bribed the guards at the tomb to say the body was stolen! But the truth of Jesus’ resurrection could not be hidden by a bribe. With the coming of the Holy Spirit, the other disciples began to preach the good news. Before that, however, it took some convincing and appearances on Jesus’ part to overcome their shock and amazement. Over the next few weeks we will experience the efforts of that small group of disciples to make known the news of Jesus - not only his resurrection, but his teachings and healing and the reality that he is the one whom God has sent to save us. The Acts of the Apostles will acquaint us with the reaction of many, from Jew, Greek and Roman alike. Those reactions are still in existence. We who believe have a big challenge. We believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and is risen from the dead. His resurrection is our guarantee that death is not the end of life, only the beginning of a new one. This is the sign of a love greater than any we could imagine on our own. Christ is risen! Alleluia! AMEN
