Word to the Wise
Sunday, April 15, 2018 - 3rd Sunday of Easter - B
[Acts 3:13-15, 17-19; 1 John 2:1-5a; Luke 24:35-48]SUNDAY, APRIL 15, 2018. THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER [Acts 3:13-15, 17-19; 1 John 2:1-5a; Luke 24:35-48] [Jesus] said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the law of MOses and in the prophets and psalms musts be fulfilled.” Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures. And he said to them, “This it is written that the Christ would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day and that repentance, for the forgiveness of sins, would be preached in his name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things.” [Luke] This weekend I am beginning a parish mission at St. Timothy Parish in Laguna Niguel, CA, near Los Angeles. The title of the mission is WITNESSES TO THE RESURRECTION. I took the title from the last words in today’s gospel scripture when Jesus says, “You are witnesses to these things.” And that is what I expect to say to the folks who attend the mission and to my Beloved Congregation. To be a witness is to take on a risky task. We are all aware of the courtroom ritual of being sworn in to “give testimony” to what one may have seen and heard. Our “swearing in” ceremony to bear witness to Jesus and what he did and taught was our baptism! Last Saturday, I celebrated the baptism of Jacob Francis Baker. His family will bear witness to him about Jesus until he is old enough to speak on his own. It is through their witness that he will learn. All of us have our Catholic faith from faithful witnesses who have handed down the truth to us for 2000+ years. It might be helpful to spend a few moments recalling the really influential Catholic or other Christian witnesses in our lives who “bore witness” to Christ for us. We can draw our inspiration from them and, in turn, be inspiring witnesses to Jesus. He has told us we are witnesses to his truth. Can we do anything less? AMEN
