Word to the Wise
Monday, April 16, 2018 - 3rd Week of Easter - Mon
[Acts 6:8-15 and John 6:22-29]MONDAY, APRIL 16, 2018 MONDAY IN THE THIRD WEEK OF EASTER [Acts 6:8-15 and John 6:22-29] “Amen, amen, I say to you, you are looking for me not because you saw signs but because you ate the loaves and were filled. Do not work for food that perishes but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him the Father, God, has set his real.” So they said to him, “What can we do to accomplish the works of God?” Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent.” [John] We are back to the Gospel According to John, and today’s passage is the opening to the discourse that follows the multiplication of the loaves and fishes. Jesus confronts the crowd with their lack of belief in him. All they saw was lots of bread coming from very little bread. They did not see the significance of Jesus feeding them. The discourse which follows will bring us into the heart of Catholic faith, both in understanding Jesus as the bread of life and in understanding what we celebrate at the Eucharist. Three important features of the gospel appear in this passage. The first is the “Amen, amen....” statement. When Jesus begins a statement with those words in this gospel, we are called to attention! The second feature is the use of statement, misunderstanding, explanation to convey the message. The third appears in the last lines today. This whole gospel is about believing in Jesus as the One whom God has sent. The most important apostolic act in this gospel is to bring someone to faith. Are we paying attention? Can we challenge misunderstanding and help someone come to faith? In the next few days we will find our own understanding challenged. Stay tuned! AMEN
