Word to the Wise
Thursday, May 17, 2018 - 7th Week of Easter - Thurs
[Acts 22:30; 23:6-11 and John 17:20-26]THURSDAY, MAY 17, 2018 THURSDAY IN THE SEVENTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME [Acts 22:30, 23:6-11 and John 17:20-26] “I pray not only for these, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, so that they may all be one, as you, Father, are in me and I in you, that they also may be in us, that the world may believe that you sent me.” [John] The theme of Jesus as the one whom God has sent is repeated three times in today’s brief segment of Jesus’ prayer in the Farewell Discourse. The spiraling style of the discourse, however, does move the emphasis to a different point. Jesus now prays not only for the disciples there in the room, but for all the people who will come to believe because of their “word.” I find this particular assurance very comforting. Anyone who is in the ministry of itinerant preaching knows that the long term impact of their efforts will very likely not be known by the preacher. It’s a kind of Johnny Appleseed type of ministry. Jesus’ prayer means that those who hear my words can come to know that he is the one whom God has sent. But this does not apply only to my efforts, but any effort that any of us make to share our faith. We can assure others that Jesus is praying for them and that the Holy Spirit will teach them all truth. That is a powerful comfort, indeed! AMEN
