Word to the Wise
Tuesday, June 26, 2018 - Tuesday in the 12th Week in Ordinary Time
[2 Kgs 19:9b-11, 14-21, 31-35a, 36 and Matt 7:6, 12-14]TUESDAY, JUNE 26, 2018 TUESDAY IN THE TWELFTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME [2 Kings 19:9b-11, 14-21, 31-35a, 36 and Matthew 7:6, 12-14] “Do to others whatever you would have them do to you. This is the Law and the Prophets.” [Matthew] I’m sure I must have mentioned this memory before, but it always comes to me when I read Jesus’ words, which were already ancient wisdom. When I was a grade school student, the State of Louisiana would distribute school supplies and certain textbooks to all grade schools. Among the supplies were 12 inch rulers with the words of the “Golden Rule” printed on them. I doubt very many of us made the connection between the object and the wisdom since those rulers were too handy for other purposes, especially in the hands of the teacher! What Jesus points out is that the Golden Rule sums up the purpose of the Mosaic Law and his Sermon on the Mount! What is equally clear from scripture, history and daily experience is that the Golden Rule is often ignored because of human imperfection. Ask the unborn children who are victims of abortion or the immigrants who are seeking to share the “American Dream.” Ask any of those whom Jesus mentions in Matthew 25:31-45: “When I was hungry.....”. The Golden Rule only requires that we memorize those few words and act on them. When we do this because of our faith in Jesus, we become wonderful preachers. If we can find a way to make it the rule of life for those who legislate, we will truly have done a great thing! AMEN
