Word to the Wise
Saturday, January 20, 2018 - Saturday in the 2nd Week in Ordinary Time
[2 Sam 1:1-4, 11-12, 19, 23-27 and Mark 3:20-21]SATURDAY, JANUARY 20, 2018. SATURDAY IN THE SECOND WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME [2 Samuel 1:1-4, 11-12, 19, 23-27 and Mark 3:20-21] Jesus came with his disciples into the house. Again the crowd gathered, making it impossible for them even to eat. When his relatives heard of this they set out to seize him, for they said, "He is out of his mind." [Mark] The "agenda" of the Gospel According to Mark makes misunderstanding and disbelief the usual reaction to Jesus until he is crucified and risen. This includes the Apostles and his natural family! Today we are told that his family planned to 'intervene' and get him out of sight. This wasn't just for Jesus' sake but for theirs as well. We might speak of this as the "family name" or reputation. We will have to wait until next Tuesday to learn how successful his family would be in their effort! To his audiences, Jesus appeared as someone new and strange because he seemed to challenge established ways of looking at how God works with humans, especially through the Mosaic Law. In our own times, there is a danger that we 'domesticate' Jesus. He can lose his newness and challenge. Pope Francis has awakened many a Catholic with his merciful and inviting ministry. He is challenging us to a fresh understanding of the Church and the gospel..There is some misunderstanding, to be sure, but that is part of being in the role of Vicar of Christ. Can we understand what he means by the 'joy of the gospel?' AMEN
